I am currently doing my B.Tech in Electronics and Communication in the National Institute of Technology Calicut(NITC). I am not going to write anything about tech here as i belong to that class who considers the ‘NIT’ acronym for ‘Not so Interested in Technology’
. My passions include debating, books and movies. I love debating both for the fun of it and for competing.
Political topics are my favourite even though socially contentious issues also grab my attention. Shashi tharoor is my favourite columnist and Kalpana Sharma fascinates me with her ‘The other Half’ inspite of its obvious feminist undercurrents. Politically i am inclined to the right supporting free market and opening up but i believe that the interests of every section has to be kept in mind while doing so.
I was into a lot of fiction reading Thomas Harris, Forsyth, Grisham and Archer but quit now because of the out of the world conspiracy theories. It was Archer’s ‘Honour among theives’ that brought me to such a decision which inspite of its fast pace and gripping writing has an almost impossible plot. But still i will rate ‘The day of the jackal’ as one of the best books i have read. So now i am more into classics and non fiction. ‘100 years of solitude’ and ‘1984′ are the best novels that i have read so far in that genre. While the former is an intoxicating fusion of reality and fantasy taking you through the 100 years of the Buendia family with its share of incest and paedophillia portraying the turbulent flow of time and the circular nature of history the later is a chilling account how a totalitarian regime exercises its authority on people. I have also been fascinated by the carefree style of R.K.Narayan of late.
I watch English and Malayalam movies. Although i am not against Hindi movies i do not watch them without having seen the review as i am not interested in a gamble that is 3 hours long. ‘Saving private Ryan’ is my favourite movie and Tom Hanks my favourite actor with the Californian beauty Jessica Alba topping the list in the case of the fairer sex. ‘Schindler’s List’ is one movie that you can watch a thousand times and still shed tears at the end. ‘Kazhcha’ and ‘In Harihar Nagar’ are my all time favourite malayalam movies.
